1400 L Street, NW
Washington, DC

BACK
The 1400 L project is a building repurpose in NW Washington DC.  The entire building is being repurposed and an important part of that is a main 2nd floor terrace area.  This space will flow out from the main communal space of the new building and will provide exterior access for the building users.  WMC-LA has developed a plan for the terrace, utilizing custom built-in planters and seating, along with complimentary moveable planters and plant materials.

WMC-LA has introduced custom corten steel planters, integrated with precast seating surfaces to bring warmth and texture into the tight space.  Care was taken in looking at details to ensure that the corten would not stain the deck surfacing, and that the ability to add lighting could be integrated into the design.  The precast elements will provide form to the space and provide flexibility for seating and the use as bar height elements.

All materials and plants have been chosen to complement the interior space to create a seamless feel between the spaces, as well as to create a sense of depth to the space making it feel larger from inside then it is.  The space will serve as a hub for lunch, meetings and gathering opportunities, presenting a function that could never had been realized in the building before.
