The Legacy Prep School, is the second Rocketship Public School installation in the District. The school located in SE DC, was placed on a challenging site with many hurdles to overcome. WMC-LA developed a site plan that accommodate a vast amount of program to allow the school to function as intended. From parking, to green space, bio-retention, and play space WMC-LA helped to fulfill the vision of the school. Through the use of terracing, the site was able to overcome large grade changes to allow for exterior play space for various age groups. This space provides play equipment for different grade level students as well as open space for free play.
Due to the limited site area, innovation design was used to integrate stormwater management and student access at the site. A large bio-retention area needed to be provided where student access was needed, so WMC-LA developed a boardwalk design to overcome this challenge. Providing student access, as well as a bike path connection, from the school all above the required storm water treatment facility. This will serve both as an area of interest for the site, but also an educational opportunity for the students to understand the impacts of stormwater runoff.
The site was also planted with native and adaptive species, includes extensive greenroof, and is pursing LEED BD+C for Schools.
